For my entire career, I’ve targeted my website towards my clients… an extensive portfolio, a simple about page and a contact page. That’s the norm for most photography websites and is still a great route to go.
But I’ve recently realized that probably 2% of my overall website traffic consists of clients and/or potential clients. So what about that other 98%?
That other 98% is YOU. Aspiring photographers, fellow photographers, creative-types, designers, painters, parents, college students, fans, friends, family, followers, dreamers, thinkers and doers.
I’ve never targeted my website towards you but the time is now and I’m excited about it. I’m tired of hiding behind some mysterious celebrity portfolio and pretending like I’ve got it all figured out. The truth is I’ve never had it figured out and still don’t. But like many of you, I’m on this ride called “the freelance life”. Some of you haven’t jumped on yet but you hope to. Some of you are on that slow ascent up the mountain and some of you might be free falling. In any case, I’ve experienced all of them and I’m now ready to help you navigate.
Here we go.
Hi Jeremy, thanks a lot for the article.
I think it inspired me a lot to be more genuine in my writing -- as the same time I was going through this same thinking process -- as I described recently about this decision to tell my personal story : http://www.maxriche.com/blog/2015/07/the-decision-to-tell-my-personal-story/.
I made reference to your article because I think this kind of openness about who you are really here for is important in the photo world!
Keep up the great work!

This is why you are influential. Talented, oh yes, but also, humble and willing to remain teachable. Bravo.
Thank you -thank you - thank you -I appreciate your honesty, inspiration and insight. I guess I'm on the slow ascent that feels fast, or at least busy. You make it worthwhile to stop and learn. My first HelpPortrait was this past Dec. 2013. Forever changed my mindset about what pictures mean to people.
Keep after it, I've been following your work for years and while I find inspiration in your portfolio's body of work I've always looked forward to the nuggets of behind-the-scenes shots and descriptions. I cannot wait to see what you've got in store for us all!
Yay, brilliant! I look forward to it. "Free falling", ha ha, yeah, it's part of (this) life. The trick is to get up again and keep climbing ;)
I look forward to seeing your creativity and also making my brain explode trying to figure out how you did it.
@MattGates Haha awesome. And thanks?? :)
@jeremycowart really love the stuff you have been doing in your studio lately
