I’m a graphic designer and I LOVE to open up a new sketchbook and start drawing. Starting with my hands rather than a computer helps me to think more creatively. A couple of years ago, I began sketching verses when I read my Bible and occasionally would share them on my blog. To my surprise these posts always generated the most conversation, which inspired me to believe that my creativity could serve a bigger purpose than my own benefit. It wasn’t until last December that I figured out what that purpose was. I realized that my next birthday would fall on a unique date, 12-12-12. Using that platform, I could spend my entire 27th year challenging my own creativity and inspiring others to transform the most selfish day of my year into an opportunity to give and serve others.
OneVerse is a program of The Seed Company that works with Bible translation companies around the world to bring the Bible to people groups that do not have it in their heart language. They have figured out the cost to translate a Bible and broken this down verse-by-verse. I can think of so many times in my life when a single verse has given me hope, peace, an ability to forgive, boldness or trust. I can’t imagine not having the opportunity to hear or read about the hope found in Christ in my own language. Because I believe in this company and bringing the Bible to the whole world, it was easy to decide how to give through my birthday project, Year27.com.
Because art always generates conversation, the best stewardship of God-given creativity is serving others and creating opportunities for others to serve. It’s not about getting paid by a client or extra recognition. It’s about giving and a desire to see change.
So, I sketch a verse, develop the idea digitally, post it on the blog and use social media to get people involved with Year27 everyday. I don’t know what my birthday celebration will look like yet, but it’s going to be fun and it’s going to be something where we can all say “WOW! Look what God did this year!”
Wow! this is so great! What a wonderful way to glorify GOD THROUGH ART! psalm 19:1 the heavens declare the glory of god ; the skies proclaim the work of h i s hands."
