UPDATED:
My friend Marshall Lee has put together a video from this photoshoot with Marielle Jaffe. Check it out. Behind the scenes videos are always interesting to see the context of how the shots were created…

Before we get started, I want to introduce my new friend Marielle Jaffe. You’ll want to remember this name cause she is currently blowing up on the Hollywood scene. She’s already starred in Scream 4, American Teenager, among others and is filming a big feature film this summer as the lead, starring role. It’s going to be fun to sit back and watch her career explode. We’ll soon be able to say “we knew her when she starred on Jeremy’s little blog” haha.
Be sure to follow Marielle on Facebook and Twitter to keep up with her!
If you’ve been following me lately, you probably have seen the recent feature that Visual Supply Co. did on a recent shoot with Marielle and I. We had a ton of fun going that dark and abstract for that project but we wanted to shoot some more general publicity images that Marielle could use for other purposes.
So we re-united for another shoot but this time, there was literally no plan in place. We just wanted to hop in a car and go shoot. Keep in mind, there was no crew whatsoever. No hair and makeup artists, no wardrobe stylists, no photo assistants. Just Marielle, me and my friend and videographer, Marshall Lee. (You’ll see that video here soon.) By the way, I’m still blown away that Marielle can go a full day with no hair and makeup help. Not many people can get away with that.
It’s been a long time since I’ve worked in this way but I absolutely love it. It’s incredibly freeing to have no crew and no client to tell you what to do and it was a fresh reminder that I need to be doing a lot more shoots like this one.
So now, onto software. I typically process my RAW photos with Capture One Pro. But my friends at VSCO recently released some Lightroom 4 presets called VSCOFilm. I’ve been blown away at how legit these presets are. They truly do look like film and it’s been great to have an alternative editing solution to C1P.
For last week’s shoot with Marielle, I decided to process the shoot with BOTH programs and let you decide which software you like better. I’ll withhold my opinion for now as I’m curious to hear yours. So scroll below and let me know in the comments which images you’re more drawn to. VSCOFilm or Capture One Pro?

Here are a few more images from my first shoot with Marielle. These were all edited with VSCOFilm.

Seems like if one tweaked the seetings enough in Capture one, similar effects could be achieved (and saved as presets). It would be interested in Vsco created a set of presets for Capture one. I prefer the workflow of capture one and am not too stoked about changing to lightroom, although I respect what it does. anyone out there know of any downloadable presets for capture one?
Hi! i generally prefer/like the vsco pictures. they have something special in them that makes them interesting.. i don't know if "move you" is the best way to describe it but they surely makes your eyes stayed glued to the image. However, in some pictures, i think the vsco are to dark. but maybe that's just an eay edit-fix, i don't know. to sum up, i would give the vsco my vote but capture one is not far behind. i must also complement on the images, very beautiful photos. // Erik
I prefer the capture one, because of its colors, what Sam software do you use Jeremy to catalog and archive images, media pro is a bitch :).
I thought it would be a clear win for VSCO but I like the C1P better. However I wonder how long it took you to create that look in CP1 versus VSCO.
As a pro wedding photographer i love vsco for its speed. I feel most images edited with phaseone look "better". But what also interests me is the time it took to create the wanted results with both of the programs. Great work, the images (both) look great :)
they rank about even in my mind, giving only a slight edge to LR and the presets. They both look good, I just prefer the way LR "develops" RAW files compared to the more muted look of Capture One.
Awesome artwork, I guess we are used to photos and images from Capture One and PS Cs, the VSCO images would be just as fine once we get used to them. Was that helpful? I hope so
C1's are my choice. Some of the VSCO ones are cool, but wreak of presets. Plus, and most importantly, I feel like the C1 edits would hold up well when printed, and the VSCO edits would lose their appeal. I do like the under exposed, cooled down one though.
In most cases I prefer the Capture One Pro but I do like the look of the brighter/light colored VSCO cam shots.
All your photos look really nice. I am a fan of VSCO and it does make for some nice effects but capture one pro just blows it away. Even though vsco say their presets are timeless I think the photos edited in C1p look better to stand the test of time.
Nice work J! apart from those creamy beach shots, I think the COP shots are the go. Just my opinion. cheers!
I prefer the vsco on the images where you pulled back from her and the capture one closeups.. the capture ones feel more conventional but sometimes you just have to highlight a beautiful face with zero "effects." Thanks for sharing your beautiful work.
Overall I leaned toward the VSCO more than c1p. But there were a few images that I clearly preferred C1P. Overall all the images were great. Nice work Jeremy.
Please excuse the typos in my post, I am submitting via iPhone and behaves awkwardly with the posting and typing in the entry space. Hope You got the point though! Im a huge admirer of your work!
On all but two of the photos I think I prefer the Capture One Pro shots. That's not at all what I was expecting.
I too thought I would like the VSCO ones much more but my eye was instantly drawn to most of the Capture 1 shots. It raises the question of how the images are to be used. If you are to sell clothes then the capture 1 shots grab your attention straight off. If its more for an art shot or part of a series then I think the VSCO ones have more 'feeling'. But as always another great set of images and some good comments too.
I want to VSCO film for everything, because I love what it can do your images, but honestly with most of these, I can stray away from the "fine" quality you see in the capture one files. It brings out so much more in most of these shots and give them a light and life that radiates. However, that being said, in almost all of the beach shots, I do prefer the VSCO film edits, it gives them a quality that is so appealing and complimentary to the image that it's just undeniable. I feel this is more true in the lighter beach shots as compared to the darker images, where I think the capture one edits appeal more. All in all, and as always, I love all of these shots and which ever aesthetic you decide to o with will work beautifully!
jey jeremy, I think it is a bit unfair to put these two together when you prosess one darker than the other.. In the pictures you show here, capture one delivers brighter images that are more accesible to the every-day-viewer. While VSCO delivers more interesting pictures, though they are a bit too dark for my taste. For my own workflow, nothing beats lightroom with vscofilm in it.
I have been using vscocam and vscofilm lately and loving it. What I don't like is that some of the photos processed with vsco are too flat and too dark. I think it's 50/50 but when vsco wins, it is with a huge leap!
I can't choose a favorite. sometimes i like the washed out, grainy look of vsco and sometimes i hate it and like the bright color of capture one pro. cool stuff!
Hay there looking at them both, one amazing and two the preset seems to have worked grey they really pull off the film look well
Oooh that is tough. I like the clarity and dimension of the Capture One Pros, but I really love the tonality and moodiness of the VSCO edits. Is it against the rules to say both?! That's a tough call.
Capture One Pro for suresies! VSCO is looking washed out... interesting, but only for a short while (trendy). Really love your images either way :)
I think the capture one processed images are the better of most of these. but the VSCO presets have quite a few different looks among themselves, so these aren't necessarily what all VSCO edited images look like. For myself, I only prefer 2 of them as a starting point and then adjust to taste. So, for those that haven't seen much of VSCO's edits or used it themselves, this isn't a complete Capture One vs. VSCO ability to edit an image. Also, to me, the Lightroom grain couldn't look worse... it's not fooling anybody.
I tend to like the higher contrast look of the cap1 edits better. But I guess I choose differently when I'm using VSCO with LR because I usually pick something that does increase the contrast or I tweak from their starting point to get me a bit more contrast.
For me, Capture One wins in a walk, but several of your VSCO-edited files (mostly the larger ones) are great too. More importantly though, the pictures are fantastic.
Both look nice. vsco being a perset, would be easy to use in lightroom rathen than learning a new software...i think it mainly depends on individual taste, both have their edges...on each other.....
Tough call. I am drawn to Capture One Pro at first, but I do love the feel of VSCO Film. I don't know if I could choose one over the other b/c I feel each has equally great quality. Nice work, Jeremy.
I think my eyes are drawn more to the images processed with Capture One. I found that a lot of the images processed with VSCO seemed really faded and muted. I do really like a lot of the colour tones from the VSCO shots though. on a side note, my favorite images are from the first shoot. they tell so much more story and have a motion picture quality to them. i want to know more about them.
Tough choice. Some of the VSCO Film ones are clearly better and definitely more filmic/filtered in appearance. Still, the Capture One edits look to be more your established style. I prefer the Capture One vibrance in a lot of these. They're all good. Can't really go wrong with either.
honestly, i love both! and that doesn't help you at all! Ha..But I think the majority i'm drawn to are the ones edited with vscofilm! They are so good! You work is truly incredible. i'm So inspired by your creativity! Thank you!
I really like the VSCO images, takes me back to shooting Kodak B&W TMax. The capture 1 shots look great too, but I would give the edge to vsco becuase it takes me back to when I was in high school in the dark room. Thanks for posting this, very cool stuff.
I recently purchased the VSCOfilm presets and I dig em. I saw on Twitter this morning people on the fence and talking about VSCOfilm being for hipsters. With a few tweaks VSCOfilm is a great starting point for my work. To each their own right.
I find myself really appreciating both edits for different reasons. The key is knowing what is truly best for the image. You could rely fully on VSCO or you rely fully on C1P and get good results, but perhaps the best results end in using both tools to tell the story you need to tell for that particular set of imagery? There are times where C1P captures the light and "poppy" mood really well, but it failed to communicate the thoughtful, slightly darker mood that VSCO really brought to the same image. Too many folks are going to be a "house divided" on this, but I see them both as HUGE assets to a shoot like this. What edit is going to tell a better story? Go with that edit.
no hands-down winner. It's not the tool as much as the one editing. vsco might offer more rapid development but some of them look better than capture one wh ile others look best from capture one. just my $0.02
Hands down, I like the Capture One edits... Going into this, I thought I would like the VSCO edits better; I'm not a real fan of the muted levels, though, from the VSCO edits. Either way, awesome pics!
Wow, for me, Capture One wins pretty much every single comparison. But I wonder if Capture One produces images that are similar to Lightroom without the VSCO presets.
It's a tough call but i Think Capture 1 Wins. There are a few images that look magnificent with VSCO. I tend towards everything in moderation when it comes to presets. I need to look into Capture 1. Don't know much about it!
